One of the best things about Drawing Step-by-Step is that it shows you how to immortalize your pet on paper! Beyond that, this is more than the average sketch guide—it not only includes techniques for working in pencils, charcoal & chalk, colored pencils, pastels & Conté crayons, water soluble pencils and an assortment of pens, but also provides plenty of guidance from five well-loved authors. Start with the basics, then draw 11 lovely compositions in a variety of styles. Richard Box, Ronald Swanwick, Denis John-Naylor, Sally Michel and Carole Massey break the instructions down into baby steps, so you never go wrong as you sketch “Lemons, Peppers and Tomatoes,” “Bankside Birches,” “Windmill on the Water,” “Justin the Cat” and more.

I bought this thinking it was a beginners guide and it is not. The author(s) jump right in with terminology as if you know what they are talking about. It is NOT a step-by-step to drawing. Truly was disappointed, not for beginners, at all.

This book has some useful information in the front of the book, such as different strokes using pencils, pens and other materials. However, the step-by-step instructions for the compositions leave much to be desired. More is discussed about position of the objects to be drawn than step-by-step on how to execute the composition. I am not saying it is a horrible book, just not at all what I was looking for. I wanted something that was a little more step-by-step, to force me to practice things like perspective, light source, shadows, movement and tips on achieving these correctly. I thought there were more pages with images of different view points before committing to a drawing than pages actually showing the steps. I think there is a lot of experience that is assumed in this book. Not necessarily the best for beginners, but a very good book for more advanced artists looking to hone their composition skills.
