City and suburban dwellers alike are stepping out into the fresh air, away from the computer and the TV (though maybe not from the cell phone!), looking around and saying, “I like it out here!” Peek inside the pages of Cultivating Life to find nature-inspired crafts and outdoor projects, time-honored gardening techniques and many more inspiring activities to enjoy in the great outdoors:
• build a salad table or a cold frame, then grow some microgreens and a tabletop rice paddy, and treat yourself to a fresh-picked salad
• enjoy every season’s bounty with recipes such as Pine Nut-Crusted Tomatoes or Pumpkin & Cauliflower Gratin
• preserve the beauty of nature with lovely crafts, such as a pebble mosaic pot or a gourd lamp
• conserve energy and save money by making and using a clothesline trellis and a compost bin (Step-by-step instructions make these and many more projects a snap!)
• control pests naturally by planting Venus flytraps or pitcher plants—or build a bat house!
In the tradition of everyone’s favorite farmgirl, Sean Conway and Lee Alan Buttala (the team behind PBS’s Cultivating Life) make reconnecting with nature—right in your own backyard—fun!

I am so happy with this book. There are wonderful ideas in here. So far I have completed the Hanging Kitchen Garden and I am going to attempt Willow Water. On Mothers day I will sit down with my daughters and make the Rice Paper votives as my Husband and son work on the cold frame. All are simple projects that enhance our lives and bring us closer to the simple things in life, an important lesson to teach the kids today. This book will stay on my shelf for years.

I purchased my copy of Cultivating Life a few weeks ago and find myself picking it up and flipping though its pages every chance I get. Cultivating Life: 125 Projects for Backyard Living is a wonderful and delightful book that is chocked full of great ideas on things you can do in the backyard and to beautify your home. It has simple and straight forward instructions on how to make the projects covered in the book. For example, there is a section on ?Getting Comfortable Building Your Own Project? that clearly lays out, step by step what it takes to make a cedar potting bench. The directions are so simple and clear that even I, an older woman, can follow them. In addition to this particular project, there are projects on growing flowers, vegetables, herbs and fruits. Also, projects on harvesting produce and seed saving as well as projects on digging and dividing bulbs and planting trees. The book includes garden craft projects on such things as making pebble mosaic pots out of things we all have available in our own backyards and includes fun projects we can do with our children and grandchildren. As the title implies, this book is about Life and it is filled with ideas we can use to enrich our lives. The Authors are Sean Conway and Lee Alan Buttala, who are the producers of the program ?Cultivating Life? that runs on PBS and I am so happy that they have written this program companion book. I highly recommend this book.

What a beautiful book to look at with great projects and recipes to do. The backyard projects are fun for our whole family to work on together. I liked the book so much that I bought one for me and one as a gift for a friend.

This book was right up our alley. My husband and I flagged several projects to incorporate into our home and garden. The pictures are beautiful also. I'm really enjoying this book.
